You deserve a mountain every morning

“What I learned from 2015, China, Amsterdam and Neil Gaiman.”

In 2015 I was living in Shanghai for most of my time. I travelled to Amsterdam four times and learned that there is no point in settling someplace where your loved ones are not. I learned that one must do what he absolutely loves and wake up in the morning excited to go to work.

I learned that work should not be felt like work. I had to learn by going mad, working like a hamster on a treadmill. Of course ending up nowhere. Thank you China, you have been an amazing teacher.

I learned to trust on my instincts when the course or the foundation is not right (yet). I learned to say no and walk away. To walk away from something that seemed really good, that I’ve aimed for and finally deserved. But my heart was no longer in it.

I learned that my heart can only be in it when it brings me closer to my mountain. Everyone has their own mountain; a higher goal, a purpose, a vision that becomes a driving force and a compass in decision making. The concept of having my own mountain came from a commencement speech by Neil Gaiman called “Make Good Art”, you should have a mountain too. And you should watch his speech, it’s hilarious and insightful.

Whenever you look out the window of life and you cannot see your mountain, it is behind you and you’re heading in the wrong direction. “Is this choice bringing me closer to my mountain?” is the question I ask myself all the time. If life isn’t taking you straight to the top, when things take time and effort, we can at least keep going in the right direction.

This is my mountain:

CREATE A HAPPY LIFE
WITH LOVELY WIFE AND
CHILDREN TO GIVE LOVE
AND WISDOM TO

FOLLOW A PROFESSIONAL PATH
OF CREATIVE BUSINESS
DEVELOPMENT, WORKING WITH
GREAT PEOPLE WITH SMALL EGO’S
AT SELF-FOUNDED WINNING
COMPANIES

FIND A PLACE IN THE SUN
CLOSE TO NATURE AND NEVER
STOP INVESTING IN PERSONAL
DEVELOPMENT AND MY PHYSICAL
AND MENTAL HEALTH
AND ALWAYS
BE AN INSPIRATION TO OTHERS
TO DO THE SAME

It is a joy to wake up every morning next to my love and look out the window to see a garden. Then start working or go to the gym and master my own time. Getting closer to my mountain everyday.

What is your mountain? I would love to know.
